RFID Technology in a Warehouse

rfidRFID technology provides a new solution to a warehouse inventory problem. RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) is a means if identifying goods with the help of radio signals.

System elements:

  • RFID-gates that consist of a metal framework integrated with antennae-tipped RFID-readers
  • Database operator's room

Warehouse RFID system means of operation

Each specially labeled item of goods that is being carried through (in or out) RFID gates is scanned by the system and its data is fixed in the system. Personnel ID cards can be a part of the system as well. While carrying goods in our out, security guard can see whether the person carrying the item away matches the photo of a staff member responsible for the goods. This allows suppressing all potential breaches. Information is transferred to the central server and is stored there.

You can as well combine RFID system with video surveillance. Thus, you will be able to create a video archive, storing information about each labeled goods item going through RFID gates. This system will allow you not only to conduct video surveillance, but also collect textual data about each goods item carried through the gates.

Warehouse inventory

Apart from integrated RFID-readers, a system may include mobile data retrieval terminals. They are used for warehouse inventory RFID identification. To do this, you will need:

  • To take an initial inventory of the goods as they arrive to your warehouse: label them, read the labels with the help of mobile terminal and tag each label with relevant information.
  • Next time, when you need to take an inventory, you can download the initial inventory document from your database or from a mobile terminal. Based on this document, you can take a new inventory by reading existing labels with RFID mobile terminal.

The most obvious advantages of RFID inventory are its speed and simplicity. An operator can simply walk about the warehouse, quickly reading labels with mobile terminal; afterwards, he compares the number of goods with an inventory document.

Types of RFID labels

Metal items are tagged with special framework labels. They can be read from a considerable distance, thus placing a chip with an antenna far from a metal surface. All in all, a wide range of labels can be used: corruptible, with a spanned memory, erasable, etc. This depends on your goals and expectations while designing the project. Distance and the direction of antenna reading are configured separately. This allows you to eliminate mistakes with excessive reading, since a box carried near the gates does not necessarily mean the box carried through the gate.

Implementation of RFID system gives your warehouse a number of important advantages:

  • controlling your goods movement in real time
  • encouraging higher responsibility among your staff
  • increasing search speed and goods inventory speed
  • reducing human labor, necessary for waybill goods inventory and goods unloading
